This week I asked Rae a few questions here is what she had to say....

How & when did you get into digital crafting?

I had a huge embroidery machine, took up lots of space, so in 2004 when we retired, sold our home and moved into a motorhome to see the USA I had to downsize. I saw a new cutter called the Wishblade and here I am 6 machines later and obsessed with cutting things.

Love fancy fold cards and intricate cutting

What is your least favourite thing to design?

I only work on the ones I like-avoid frustration I say

What is your favourite product you’ve designed?

One of the first cards I put up for sale is a wedding Mr & Mrs Step Card - it remains my best seller

What is your favourite colour and why?

When you are not designing what are you up to?

I love the casino and movies

Designer Spotlight - AfreshStudio aka Pauline Black

This week I asked Pauline a few questions here is what she had to say....

How and when did you get into digital crafting.

In the mid 90's I got my first IBM PC, second-hand for $200 which just had DOS and boring to use so I left it sitting a corner for several months.  Eventually I got a Graphical User Interface and went online via email and FTP.  It was through using the newsgroups that I discovered a wealth of images by artists and designers from all over the world.  What an eye opener!!!!

I also discovered you could download, via Newsgroups, various software programs as "Shareware".   So I installed my first version of Paint Shop by Jasc., version 3.1 in 1995.  This program fitted onto a floppy disk back then.  By 1998 I was given a gift of Jasc PaintShop 5, the first version offering "layers".  It wasn't long before I joined every online PSP group and forum that I could.   One was    I learned a lot  about photo retouching and restoration which held my interest for a few years.  Photo art and manipulation became popular soon after and image editing programs were becoming more sophisticated.

At the same time, I had started using the Netscape browser, learned about HTML and set up a website with general information about Scotland.  I used a freeware HTML program called Arachnophilia to design the entire site.  I had the site for five years and it was a lot of fun.  So I was learning how to design web graphics at that time.  Designing graphics for printing was a different matter altogether as we all know.

By 2006 I came across a USA photographer, Marilyn Sholin, who had started a brand new forum about digital fine art and in particular using Corel Painter Software.  It was then I got myself hooked using this program along with a graphics tablet and pen.  I still have my  original tablet and just replace the nibs when needed.  Marilyn's fine forum has closed too.

Do you use a PC or MAC

PC, Windows 7

What program/programs do you use to design?

Lots!!!!  The main ones though are Corel PaintShopProX5 Ultimate, Corel Painter 12,Photoshop Elements 11

Where do you get your inspiration

When I discovered websites such as CGFA and in my early years on the net.  Nowadays, I enjoy a lot of contemporary artists works such as Leonid Afremov and Debra Hurd, I love bright colours and their style of painting.  I enjoy watching Jane Davenport and Traci Bautista at work too.  Also, the Corel Painter Master (there are a lot of others) Jeremy Sutton along with Marilyn Sholin.

What is your favourite thing to design

For now, vintage inspired images.

What is your least favourite thing to design.

Anything sinister.

What is your favourite product you've designed.

Nothing in particular however I enjoy mostly what I create using Corel Painter Software from my own photo references.

When you are not designing, what are you up to?

My hubby (75) and I reside under the same roof as our only son, daughter-in-law, grandson and lovely new grand-daughter (born on the 4th of July 2013).  There's never a dull moment away from the computer.  We have two daughters and their children who live nearby with their children aged from 11 to 18 years.

If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go.

Italy.  I love Italian food.

What was your favourite subject at school.

What is your favourite book.

There are a few, but the one that had most impact when I read it as a young woman was "The Nun's Story"

What do you do for fun.

When I get time I'm delving into mixed media projects, getting my hands dirty and loving it.   I'd like time to learn more about painting watercolours.

Where do you live

We live in Western Australia.  My husband and I migrated here with our two daughters in 1970 from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Designer Spotlight

Hi my name is Ester the owner and a  designer for Crafty Card Making, in the coming weeks I hope to introduce you to our designers so you can learn a little bit about them, the things they  like to do and how they design their products.
So I will start the ball rolling by
answering some  of the questions myself.....

1. How & when did you get into digital crafting?
It must have been when we arrived in Spain in 2003, and once I started I couldn't stop.

2. Do you use a PC or MAC?
I use a PC and a laptop, but mainly the PC as it's faster.

3. What program/programs do you use to design?
I use various programs, mainly Paint Shop Pro X5 for the designing.

4. Where do you get your inspiration?
I always like to start with a colour palette, perhaps I see a photo or graphics that I like and then take the colours and play.

5. What is your favourite thing to design?
I love designing paper packs.

6. What is your least favourite thing to design?
I don't really like making complicated card designs.

7. What is your favourite product you’ve designed?
I love making the bead sheets, they make up into beautiful beads and then that's when I get my jewellery head on and make up necklaces bracelets and earrings.

8. If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go?
I have always wanted to go the Canada and see Niagra Falls, it's on my bucket list.

9. If you could be any character in fiction whom would you be?
It would have to be Morticia Addams, I love the Addams family and the way she dresses.

10. Do you own a pet and what's it's name?
I have 3 pets 2 dogs named Blue and Gypsy and a Canary called Budgie (don't ask).

11. Would you rather live in the country or in the city?
I love living in the country, after living here for the last 10 years I don't think I could go back to crowded places.

12. What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten?
Well I know there will be some of you who won't like this, but I've eaten and enjoyed whale meat, my mum is from the Faroe Islands and they catch and eat them there.
